At around the 200 degrees Celsius mark, most non-stick cookware begins to release harmful chemicals that can give rise to a suite of health problems.
Non-stick pots and pans are coated with a synthetic polymer that contains the carcinogenic chemical perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). When heated, PFOA emits toxic fumes. When you cook with a non-stick pot or pan every night, you expose yourself to this and other toxic chemicals that put you and your family at risk.
Some chemicals used in the creation of non-stick cookware, including PFOA, have shown up in blood samples from people unaware of ingesting or inhaling them. According to some university studies, these chemicals have been linked to cancer in laboratory animals, as well as elevated cholesterol, thyroid disease and reduced fertility.
Scientists and cookware experts have been divided over the toxic nature of Teflon® (due to the significant presence of PFOA) since its invention in the middle of the twentieth century. Some steadfastly believe that regular use of non-stick cookware has a direct correlation to health factors. Others refuse the link, claiming that readings of PFOA and other chemicals found in blood samples cannot be proven to be derived from Teflon®.
For us, though, the health risks associated with non-stick cookware outweigh the convenience factor of cooking with Teflon®. This is supported by the fact that other naturally-derived non-stick coating cookware products are available on the market.
Healthy solutions for safe family cooking range from using ceramic dishes to cooking with bronze, iron and stainless steel pots and pans. While bronze and cast iron cookware products (typical of regional Europe) are safe, they come at a higher cost than the more readily available stainless steel or ceramic coated Neoflam cookware.
At Vive, we choose to stock Neoflam cookware in our online store as a healthy, PFOA-free alternative to non-stick cookware.
Neoflam cookware contains a ceramic coating called Ecolon, and is an reliable, long-lasting substitute for Teflon products. Ecolon is a safe and eco-friendly substance consisting predominantly of silicon dioxide. Unlike nasty PFOA, silicon dioxide is a raw material which is commonly found in stones and sand. It is completely safe for the body and the environment.
If you are concerned that your cookware could be making you sick, we suggest you make the switch to Neoflam non-stick cookware. Neoflam cookware is available at our online store, and our low prices and regular Neoflam cookware sales make it an affordable solution for a healthy, natural home.
